Rare Scarlet Electrical Discharge Recorded in the Atmosphere

A group of image specialists operating in New Zealand have successfully captured photographs of “red sprites”, one of the most elusive celestial events in the world, in which bright red bursts appear in the atmosphere.

A Memorable Night of Discovery

This group of artists began their evening to shoot the galactic core over the unique geological structures in the southern region of the country on a night in October, before encountering the rare phenomenon.

They thought they would be fortunate to get good weather that evening, but their night turned into “an unforgettable one,” an individual involved commented.

“He was checking his files for a Milky Way panorama and realized he had photographed crimson electrical bursts,” the photographer said. “The discovery was astounding – it resulted in screaming and shouting and various reactions in the darkness.”

Explaining Red Sprites

Red sprites are electrical discharges in the higher atmospheric layers, produced by storm systems. In contrast to lightning that shoots towards the earth, these events ascend towards the upper atmosphere, creating structures that look like vertical forms, carrots or even bell-shaped organisms. The initial image of a red sprite was taken – unintentionally – in 1989, by a research unit at the an educational institution.

Brief and Otherworldly Sightings

These events are extremely short-lived – enduring only a thousandth of a second – that they are seldom seen to the naked eye, but a team member was fortunate. “I happened to be looking directly at a sprite when it took place – just a perfect coincidence observing the correct area of the heavens and I saw a momentary scarlet burst,” he said.

Witnessing the occurrences was a goal for this individual, an acclaimed nocturnal imaging specialist. “It appears as if you are observing an unreal vision, it feels otherworldly … the color is a profound crimson that is visible for an instant, so it is captivating to witness.”

Skill-Based and Creative Mastery

Photographing a red sprite needs a proficiency with advanced imaging techniques, as well as an familiarity with scientific principles and innovative thinking, he stated. “It’s a really involved form of imaging that’s highly fulfilling as well.”

A different team member commented it was one of the “most incredible evenings” of his life. “I witnessed the galactic band shining above the skyline while these massive crimson strands of illumination moved above a storm hundreds of kilometres away,” he said.

A Unique Photographic Achievement

To his knowledge, there are no further recordings depicting red sprites and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in the same photograph.

“It was one of those moments when you realize you are seeing a phenomenon that may not recur in your lifetime.”
